Taking Off Your Mask

What would happen if you took off your mask? What would reveal itself? Aren’t you the slightest bit curious to find out?

We all walk around in the world wearing these masks - different ones assigned to different compartments of our lives - afraid to be seen. The comedian shows up in awkward situations. The staunch conservative shows up in conversations with your brother-in-law and your boss. The stoic shows up at the dinner table. The giddy one shows up on a first date.

Every mask change makes it harder to answer the question:

Who are you?

But the answer is hidden in plain sight. It’s underneath all of these masks.

There’s something there that cannot be altered or messed with, no matter what’s going on in the outside world, no matter what masks we’ve decided to put on this morning.

It’s a voice so subtle, so quiet that we rarely ever slow down enough to hear it.

We’ve been fooled into believing we are too busy, too important to take off these masks. That the world is too scary of a place to let our guards down. Maybe that’s true, but what if it isn’t?

What if paying tribute to that subtle voice is what we were put here to do?

What if all the rest of this is nonsense, meant to distract us from our true purpose?

Maybe it isn’t true.

But aren’t you the slightest bit curious to find out?
