Presence > Presents
I just spent an hour and a half crafting the perfect post about being present this holiday season, about legacy, and about what matters most. It included some crazy stories about my mom and the legacy she left behind. But just as I went to post it, I somehow deleted it. Completely.
I laughed at first, but I must admit I’m a little bit pissed about it.
Then the lights flickered.
The irony is, by spending that hour and a half writing - trying to communicate this important idea to you - I was not spending that time present with the people I love. I wasn’t taking my own advice. Such a Christmas hypocrite, I am.
And so with that, I cannot justify sitting here and trying to recreate that piece of writing. I have to go focus all my attention and energy on people I love, but I will give you the gist of it.
In It’s A Wonderful Life, Clarence asks George Bailey:
“Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?”
All you can do is show up and love the people in your life, breathe, and be here now.
Don’t move so fast, get so swept up in the showiness of it all that you forget what you are doing all of this for.
It’s to show the people in your life that you love them.
So do it.
Love the people in your life.
Fully. Completely. With every fibre in your being.
Nothing - and I mean nothing - could possibly matter more.
